Not Today

What’s another 7 weeks without a fridge anyway?  We’ve made it this long without an icebox on the main floor; we can make it another 7 weeks.  I keep telling myself I should be eating less when I have to go so far to get it, maybe I should move the snacks to the garage also.

Greg, Jeff and I set out for Home Depot this morning with high hopes of having the fridge in the kitchen in time for a late afternoon snack, unfortunately the fridge had other plans.

We arrived at Home Depot and our beautiful fridge was ready and waiting for us, complete with a Sweet sticker on the front door.  The ever so nice customer service clerk called for backup on her radio and four men were ready to help us load it up.  They got it out to the truck and hoisted it up into the bed, before standing it upright Greg asked if maybe the rumor he’d heard was true, could it be on it’s side if it hadn’t ever been turned on if we pinky swore to not turn it on for 24-48 hours so that the Freon could settle?  Yes, we were in luck!  Whew, first worry was no longer a worry; we could travel with it on its side, now we just had to tie it down.  It took us longer to tie it down than it did to get it into the truck, you better believe that thing was in there tight and not going anywhere.  Before the Home Depot men left us to secure the fridge to the truck we asked if we could borrow their furniture dolly, they weren’t thrilled by the idea but we promised we’d bring it ‘right back’, we must have looked like the most hopeless folks so far that morning because they let us take it.

So, once the fridge was tied down as well as we could, the furniture dolly in the back, and the dolly that Greg brought in my lap we headed for home.  The drive wasn’t too bad, slow and steady was the name of the game.  We got up Lynx Lair without much trouble; the driveway was where the real test was.  Greg lined the trunk us so that we wouldn’t have to turn on the way up, this involved backing up to what I felt like was an inch from the edge of the hill (I had visions of our fridge shooting off the back and falling down the mountain).  Thanks to Greg’s exceptional driving and his Titan he got the truck up on the first try.

Once the fridge was in the garage, still in the back of the truck, we considered the first half of the mission a success.  After everyone took a brief break we moved to getting the fridge out of the truck, I was pushing from in the truck as Jeff and Greg ‘caught’ the fridge on the ground.  The fridge was officially in the garage, woo hoo!

I decided that my help wasn’t needed and I’d be better served helping Clare take a nap and sitting in the warm house with Gail and Jeff and Greg measured and assessed just how to get the fridge into the house.   After taking the fridge doors off and measuring every angle on all steps and cleaning off front stairway it was decided that the fridge wouldn’t be making into the kitchen today.

The fridge, minus the doors and all shelves, sits in the garage tonight, waiting for it’s permeate home in the kitchen.  We’ll have to wait for the snow to melt and a few friends to help us, it’s going to need to come in the back door if we don’t want to remodel the deck or take out a wall.   We’re considering purchasing a mini fridge to keep in the kitchen with a few essentials; at least we won’t have to go to the garage for Clare’s juice and milk or a coke.

Someday we’ll have a fridge in the kitchen, someday….
